Impact
I have lived on the streets of Glen Burnie my whole life. I was used to being invisible, homeless and surviving. People often talked about me as if I wasn’t there.
One day, Ms. Valarie wrote down the name and address of a church where I could receive services. When someone questioned whether I could even read, she didn’t speak about me, she spoke to me.
“Of course he can read,” she said, looking directly at me.
I told her I had gone through high school but never graduated. She smiled and said, “Let’s change that. I bet you could pass your GED.”
One month later, I did.

My children’s father had been treating them harshly. When my 12-year-old daughter tried to shield her 6-year-old brother during an incident, she was pushed across the room.
When I asked others for help, I was told not to report it, that children need their father, and that speaking up could be used against me. He had already filed for full custody of all six of our children.
Overwhelmed and afraid, I called Ms. Valarie. She was the only person I knew who had walked through divorce and custody before.
I still remember when she arrived, her little black car skidding on the gravel of my unpaved driveway because of how quickly she drove to get to us. I remember the gravel because in that moment, I knew it was going to be alright.
She listened, first to me, then to my daughter. She didn’t interrupt. She didn’t react emotionally. She waited until we felt heard and steady.
Then she calmly said, This is what we can do. She helped me document the incident, started a reporting and witness chain. She ensure every single witness showed up for me. My daughter never had to return to that environment.
At the custody hearing, I was granted full custody of all my children.
Through her knowledge and firsthand experience, she was able to guide me in recognizing potential obstacles before they arose. Knowing what to expect allowed me to respond calmly and confidently. Fear was replaced with preparation.
